A broadband silicon vacuum window for DESHIMA2.0

Research results on instrumental development for a components of the Japan–Netherlands joint research project Deep Spectroscopic High-redshift Mapper (DESHIMA) have been published in the journal “Applied Optics”, with Ryota Takaku as the first author.

DESHIMA is a project that aims to explore the history of star formation and galaxy evolution by observing redshifts of radiation from stars and galaxies over a wide frequency band.

In this paper, we report the development of a broadband silicon vacuum window with low loss and high vacuum durability for DESHIMA 2.0, the upgraded version of DESHIMA. The window was used in actual observations throughout the full DESHIMA 2.0 observing campaign.

To enable broadband use of silicon, we fabricated a moth-eye anti-reflection structures on the silicon surface using ultrashort-pulsed laser ablation. This paper presents an important demonstration of the applicability of ultrashort-pulsed laser ablation to astronomical instrumentation, and this technology is expected to contribute to broadband operation and higher-sensitivity in the millimeter and submillimeter wavelength.
